Artist Statement, 2007
I have an active art practice using the photographic image and its theoretical ground as the foundation for my work. My work since 2000, which includes several different series, has explored issues of feminism, landscape, temporality, and national identity as well as global tourism and migration.
Along with this conceptual framework that informs my choice of imagery, I am interested in what Roland Barthes calls the affect of the image. This is ultimately a non-verbal condition of photography he explores “not as a question (a theme) but as a wound: I see, I feel, hence, I observe, and I think.” (Barthes 1980: 21) In my work I strive to realize the marriage of a considered conceptual ground with an image that through its affect compels the viewer to see, feel, observe, and think.

Je pratique l’art activement en utilisant l’image photographique et ses fondements théoriques comme base de mon travail. Mes œuvres, depuis 2000, comprennent plusieurs séries qui ont exploré des questions telles que le féminisme, le paysage, la temporalité et l’identité nationale, ainsi que le tourisme global et la migration.
Avec ce cadre conceptuel d’information sur mon choix des images, je suis intéressée par ce que Roland Barthes nomme l’affect de l’image. C’est une condition définitive non-verbale de la photographie qu’il explore « non pas en qualité de thème, mais comme une blessure : je vois, je sens donc j’observe et je pense ». Barthes 1980-21). Dans mon travail je m’évertue à réaliser l’union d’une base conceptuelle prise en considération avec l’image qui, par son affect, contraint le spectateur à voir, sentir, observer et penser.
